It is time again for the #09 Families for HoPE race car to hit the track for the 2014 racing season. This is the 8th year that short-track racer Josh Timmerman has provided space on his Chevy Late Model to help raise awareness for Holoprosencephaly (HPE).
This season Josh will be racing the full-season schedule in the AR Bodies Late Model division at Baer Field Speedway in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Josh was named Baer Field Speedway Late Model Rookie of the Year in 2010, and his goal is to make a run for the Late Model season championship in 2014.
While the kids with HPE and their families are always in Josh’s heart on race day, this season will have them in the race car with him. For each race this season, Josh will honor a child with HPE by carrying a photo of that child in his race car on race day and will also share that child’s name and photo among his fans through his website, Facebook page, etc. (Families of children with HPE may nominate their child by sending a photo to Josh at RacingforHoPE@FamiliesforHoPE.org.)
Josh became aware of HPE through his mother, Debbie Timmerman, who is a pediatric nurse. In 2006, Debbie was caring for a 4 year-old boy with HPE named Sammy Harley, and she invited Sammy and his family to attend one of Josh’s races. Sammy loved the experience, and Josh realized right away that he could use his racing career and race car to help make a difference for Sammy and other children with HPE. It was a natural fit as Sammy’s mom, Leslie Harley, was one of the founders of Families for HoPE.
Today, eight years later, Josh is a Financial Advisor by profession, but spends his weekends behind the wheel Racing for HoPE. In addition, he serves the HPE community as a member of the Families for HoPE Board of Directors where he is active with the organization’s conference and finance committees.
We are thrilled to have Josh kicking off Racing for HoPE in 2014 by honoring our special kids in such a special way. Thank you, Josh, and good luck!
